ABOUT THE WORK

Darkness. Then, a face in agony. An unnamed, naked man crawling across a cheap, run-down motel room in the desert of the American West. Detritus everywhere. Pizza boxes, empty bottles and beer cans. Out of the window, a desolate landscape, an existential space. The middle of nowhere. He starts to sing, and we realize that we are looking at a man at the end of his rope. Someone who must confront his demons, face up to everything he has done and all he has lost.

In Ashes & Snow, composer Douglas J. Cuomo (Doubt, Arjuna's Dilemma) updates Wilhelm Müller’s 24-poem cycle that became the text for Franz Schubert’s famous Winterreise (“Winter Journey”) into a seventy-five minute English-language monodrama performed at an emotional intensity that will leave the performer and audience gasping for breath, exhilarated and disturbed. A journey to an underworld, equal parts Samuel Beckett and Breaking Bad. And possibly back, to redemption....

Ashes & Snow is composed for tenor accompanied by three on-stage musicians, playing electric guitar, trumpet, and piano (keyboards), and an otherworldly electronic soundscape. This is 21st century art-song, infused by turns with acid jazz, raw punk energy, fervorish delirium and spiritual calm.

Ashes & Snow will bring together AOP and Pittsburgh Opera for the fourth time, and the third in the past two years, following Pittsburgh productions of the AOP-developed operas Paul’s Case (2013), As One (2017), and The Summer King, which made its world premiere at the Benedum Center in April 2017. It will be AOP's third production as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival that previously presented Out Cold (2012) and Hagoromo (2015).

Developed and produced by Pittsburgh Opera and American Opera Projects, in association with the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). World premiere at Pittsburgh Opera, February 2018. NY premiere at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), late 2018, as part of BAM's 2018 Next Wave Festival.
