STONED PRINCE

ABOUT THE WORK

Stoned Prince examines moments in the public and imagined private life of His Royal Highness, Prince Harry. Composers & the Voice alumna Hannah Lash’s music inhabits a bizarre, late-night emotional space, an appropriately dark and strange canvas for Royce Vavrek’s (Dog Days) libretto that unfolds via its hero’s drunken phone calls. Revealing the frailty and bravado beneath the crown, Stoned Prince follows the ginger rascal royal through his fair share of controversy, including an on-again, off-again relationship with the Zimbabwean Chelsy Davy, a penchant for liquor and marijuana, and a Nazi Halloween costume that remains his biggest lapse in judgment.

Stoned Prince is being developed as a 70 minute work for baritone/countertenor with bass clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. It is being written for the ensemble Loadbang as an expansion of a dramatic song-cycle that premiered in 2013.

Developed in partnership with The John Duffy Composers Institute.
