THREE WAY
Music by Robert Paterson
Libretto by David Cote

ABOUT THE WORK

“An excellent comic opera that will appeal to audiences well steeped in opera, as well as those who are new to the experience..." - Opera News

“In three acts, the composer and librettist explore a trio of carnal situations, often with surprisingly touching—and funny—results…” - Musical America

With music by Robert Paterson (The Whole Truth) and a libretto by David Cote (The Scarlet Ibis), Three Way is a new opera on the present and future of sex and love comprised of three, playful one-acts.

THE COMPANION
(3 singers: soprano, tenor and baritone)
Not so far in the future, workaholic Maya (soprano) lives with her android lover, Joe (tenor). This interactive programmed Companion looks and sounds perfect (despite the occasional pop-up ad). But is perfect always better? While installing new experimental software in Joe, computer technician Dax (baritone) will put Maya’s true desires to the test.

SAFE WORD
(2 singers: mezzo-soprano and baritone)
Mistress Salomé (mezzo-soprano) is a high-priced dominatrix in a private dungeon, and today she has a new client (baritone), a cocky businessman who pays to be humiliated. Despite their “safe word,” the role playing soon spirals out of control as the two fight for power and take the session to places neither expected.

MASQUERADE
(8 singers: 2 sopranos, 2 mezzo-sopranos, tenor, countertenor, baritone, bass-baritone)
A party is taking place at a country mansion. It’s not a dinner party or holiday celebration: it’s a masquerade. But when the masks go on the clothes come off allowing the guests to push the limits of erotic expression. Così fan Tutte meets Eyes Wide Shut as four very different couples face their deepest taboos with hilarious and meaningful results.

Duration: 2hrs 45mins (including two intermissions)
Instrumentation: eight-singer cast and chamber ensemble: 2 sopranos, 2 mezzo-sopranos, tenor, countertenor, baritone, bass-baritone, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, 2 violins, viola, cello, bass, percussion, piano (doubling synthesizer), conductor.
