AOP welcomes applications from musicians OF all backgrounds interested in composing for opera and music theatre and seeks to present a group of fellows that represent the diversity of our community and country. Applications are reviewed and fellowships are selected by the C&V Artistic TEAM and a panel of industry professionals chosen with an emphasis on diversity.
American Opera Projects (AOP) is proud to announce the return of its popular Composers & the Voice program for its 2019-2021 season. The tenth cycle of the program will select 6 composers and up to 3 librettists for a two-year fellowship. The primary focus of Composers & the Voice is to give composers and librettists extensive experience working collaboratively with singers on writing for the voice and contemporary opera stage. Applications for the 2019-2021 season are closed. Applications for the 2021-23 season will be available March 2021.

Composers and librettists applying jointly need not have prior collaborative projects. Please note: if a composer and librettist apply as a team, the panel reserves the right to select only one of the applicants for an individual fellowship.

We will update this section with questions and answers as they come in. Thank you for bringing any questions you have to our attention! Have a question for us? Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Don’t be shy. We are friendly and eager to help!
Q: I am a composer, but also a librettist. May I apply for both fellowships?
A: You may apply for both by filling out both applications and note in your cover letter that you would like to be considered for either fellowship. In early panel rounds, composer and librettist applications are evaluated separately, so be sure to fill out the forms and submit work samples as if they were individual applications. All materials and references will be evaluated without regard to the other application. Duplication of references and work samples are permitted. If you are a new applicant, you only need to submit one application fee.
If you are a new applicant, you only need to pay one application fee. If you are selected for a composer fellowship and you are a composer that often writes your own libretto, you will have the opportunity to set your own work, but some assignments will require collaboration with other librettists. Those selected for libretto fellowships however will not have an opportunity to workshop any of their own music.
Q: We are applying for a composer-librettist team fellowship. One of us has applied before, but the other is a new applicant. Do we need to pay the fee?
A: Yes, you will need to pay one single new applicant fee.
Q: Why do you charge an application fee?
A: The funds raised from application fees support the evaluation portion of our program. In 2019, we will only require fees to be paid by new applicants so as to encourage past applicants to reapply.
Q: May I receive feedback on my application?
A: Applicants who move to the third and final round of consideration, but are not selected for a fellowship may request feedback. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide feedback to other applicants.
