On March 18, AOP and Mabou Mines will hold a special preview and shareout of BARCELONA, MAP OF SHADOWS to an invited audience.

BARCELONA, MAP OF SHADOWS is an opera adaptation of Catalan playwright Lluïsa Cunille’s award winning play composed by Swedish American composer Mikael Karlsson (MELANCHOLIA, 2023 and FANNY AND ALEXANDER, 2024) and librettist/director Mallory Catlett (Mabou Mines). The opera is being created in collaboration with the International Contemporary Ensemble and Music Director and Conductor Rebekah Heller.

The evening will offer a glimpse into the opera's unique structure, in which selected music excerpts sung by soprano Patricia Schuman and baritone Damian Norfleet are paired with video by filmmaker Bill Morrison. Working with archival footage from the Spanish Civil war, the music and video serve to reveal the haunting images of the main character's past - the unconscious fixations lurking just below the surface.
